3D P.O.P Kiosk: Feel Good
Create a sustainable brand/Kiosk to address food insecurities on college campuses. We all know that college campuses are full of activities. There are hustling students rushing from classes to jobs, to study groups, and to games. It can be difficult for students to stop and enjoy a meal. However, we still need to eat.
Stopping to enjoy a meal goes beyond just having a busy school schedule. We, as students, experience food insecurities; we worry about "whether my food would run out before I got money to buy more, being able to afford to eat balanced meals, cutting and skipping meals even if we're hungry". This has a huge psychological and academic effect on us as students, including poor physical and mental health.
What is Food Insecurity?
USDA defines Food Insecurity as a "situation when people lack secure access to sufficient amounts of safe, nutritious food for normal growth and development and an active and healthy life."
Food insecure students include those whom the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) classifies as having either low or very low food security.
Food Insecurity for College Students in America
Food insecurity on college campuses disproportionately impacts students of color and low-income students. According to study by Wisconsin’s HOPE lab, 47 percent of Black students and 42 percent of Hispanic students at 4-year institutions experience food insecurity compared to 30 percent of their White peers.
Solution
We need to address Food Insecurity for College Students in America
Given that food insecurity affects over one-third of college students, institutions of higher education and the federal government should work together to develop policy solutions that address this systemic problem. At the university level, some institutions have taken steps like opening food pantries that provide nutritious food, allocating emergency funding to assist students. Still, students on college campuses frequently struggle to access proper nutrition. To address Food Insecurity, federal policies should expand public assistance programs like CalFresh, provide free and/or reduced cost meals to college students, reevaluate the assessment of the financial need of students.
Reduced Food Prices
College campuses need to improve food programs. If food can’t be accessed free by students, perhaps implement a program where healthy food is cheap and unhealthy food is expensive. It’s cost-effective. The more healthy students, the better cost for healthy minds and bodies. More healthy students come to school, better productivity, etc.
Healthy, whole, and local
Everyone today wants to know what they’re consuming. Students want to understand if the things they’re eating are healthy, how they impact their lifestyle, and if they’re helping the environment.
On-The-Go
Treats like coffee and juice are great, but they only go so far in curbing the craving and need actual food. Sometimes there won’t be time to make a stop at the food court or sit down and enjoy a meal in the dining hall. During those busy moments, FEEL GOOD makes sure there are opportunities for students to still get meals. It can make a difference in whether potential consumers grab their food on campus or make a pit stop at the closest drive-thru to grab their next meal.
Everybody loves the Marketplace
Truth is, an on-campus shop offering prepped meals are more convenient than going to the grocery store down the road. FEEL GOOD offers a mixture of already prepared foods to be all-inclusive. The accessibility will make it simple for those who need a last-minute option to grab their food. Not only will it save students time, but it’ll keep them on -campus enjoying healthy and local food.
FEEL GOOD
The name FEEL GOOD comes from the idea of well, feeling good (Body and Mind)! As a student who also suffers from food insecurity, all I’ve wanted is to feel good mentally and physically while attending school. At FEEL GOOD, we provide 100% plant-based meals served in recycled jars. Students can choose to reuse the jars for themselves as their own food container, coin collecting jar, a vase, anything! The students can choose to return the jars at the kiosk that can be thoroughly cleaned and reused for future meal prep and or drinks.
Logo Sketches
The origin of the Shaka
The shaka, sometimes known as “hang loose,” “right on,” “thank you,” “Things are great,” “Take it easy—in Hawaii, the sign expresses all those friendly messages and more. The illustrated walking shaka symbolizes each one of us full of positive energy. FEEL GOOD wants to provide this feeling for everyone! We provide prepped meals—breakfast, lunch, dinner, and drinks. Being 100% plant- based makes you feel great mentally and physically.
Variations
There are two different variations of FEEL GOOD logo. A condensed logo is to emphasize the standing tall positive outlook. The second variation is handwritten to symbolize the fun approach of the walking shaka expressing that it’s “feeling good”.
